It was recently announced that Jaden Smith will be playing Virgil Hawkins (Static) in the new web series Static Shock. This was amazing news to me because:
A: I’m a huge Jaden Smith fan!
B: Static Shock was literally my favorite cartoon growing up.
As we’ve progressed as a society there’s been more and more black superheroes in comics and movies. I’m excited to see what other comics/movies will feature black heroes in the future.
In the spirit of this progression, it’s only right that this blog be dedicated to (in my opinion) the top black superheroes in all of comics/movies.
Not only that but we’ll be comparing those heroes to Dallas/Texas athletes.
Without further ado… JBrightSports Presents: Black Superheroes
Name: Virgil Hawkins
Static’s powers center around electromagnetism, making him part of the Earth’s electromagnetic field as well as capable of generating and storing his own electromagnetic energy. He can choose to keep the electromagnetic energy that he currently holds in his body by controlling the current and voltage for whenever he wants to use it. Static’s body can generate raw electromagnetic energy, which he can control at will for various purposes.
Athlete Match: Delino DeShields Jr.
- Son of Delino Deshields (former MLB player)
- 8th Overall Pick in 2010 Draft
- Starting Outfielder for the Texas Rangers
Reasoning: The Rangers outfielder is a very versatile player. He can play all the outfield positions and step in and play some second base if needed. He’s only 22 and like Static he makes plays with his energy and athleticism in the outfield and on the bases. He guards the outfield of pop-flys as Static guards the city of bad guys. He lacks the dreads but other than that DeShields is a great fit for the role of Static.
Name: Miles Morales
Abilities: Bitten by a slightly different genetically engineered spider than the one that granted Peter Parker’s powers, Miles Morales possesses abilities similar to the original Spider-Man’s, including enhanced strength and agility, the ability to adhere to walls and ceilings with his hands and feet, and a “spider sense” that warns him of danger with a buzzing sensation in his head. Though his strength and agility are similar to those of the original Spider-Man, his spider-sense is not as strong, as it only warns him of immediate danger. He also has two abilities that the original Spider-Man did not have, the ability to camouflage himself, including his clothing, matches that of his surroundings, and an electrical “venom strike” that can paralyze almost anyone with just a touch.
Athlete Match: Byron Jones
- Drafted 27th Overall in First Round of 2015 NFL Draft
- Set the World and NFL Combine broad jump record with a jump of 12 ft. 3 in.
Reasoning: The Cowboys’ first round pick of 2015 was a perfect fit for the role of Spider-Man. Interestingly Byron Jones’ nickname in high school was Spider because of how he flew around the field. His combine workouts were out of this world and propelled him into the first round of the Draft. Some experts wondered if Jones was truly a superhero in pads. Whether his powers will translate onto the NFL football field remain to be seen but the expectations are high with this one. If he performs at a high level, people may want to consider actually nicknaming him the Spider-Man.
Name: James Rhodes
Abilities: Rhodes was trained as an aircraft pilot and studied aviation engineering while in service with the United States Marine Corps. He is knowledgeable in aircraft operation/maintenance and has piloted various aircraft at Stark Enterprises. Rhodes is an experienced soldier trained in unarmed combat and military weaponry such as small arms. In addition to being a pilot, engineer, soldier, and businessman, Rhodes derives multiple abilities from various hi-tech armors, either designed by Stark Industries or extraterrestrial in nature. With his years of experience with both the Iron Man and War Machine powered armors, Rhodes is skilled in armored combat and uses a more physical fighting style compared to Stark.
Athlete Match: Monta Ellis
- NBA’s Most Improved Player (2007)
- 2nd Round Pick in 2005
Reasoning: In this scenario if Monta Ellis is War Machine, then Dirk Nowitzki is Iron Man. Nowitzki has played in the NBA since 1998. He is still operating at a high-level and having that much longevity in the NBA, the player is depicted as an “Iron-Man”. While Ellis is a very good player he has been the right hand man to Nowitzki for the past couple of seasons. Just like War Machine Ellis is skilled in the heat of battle and really helps Iron Man when needed. That’s why Ellis is excellent for the role of War Machine.
Name: Sam Wilson
Abilities: The Falcon is an excellent trainer of wild birds and is a skilled martial artist and gymnast and has the ability of flight through his wing harness.
Athlete Match: Tyron Smith
- 2x Pro Bowler
- All-Pro Left Tackle
Reasoning: This may be a bit of a stretch on just pure abilities but taking the previous scenario into consideration… If Tyron Smith is Falcon then that means Tony Romo is Captain America. Makes sense seeing that Tony Romo is the quarterback of America’s Team. While Tyron Smith may not be able to fly, he is a very nimble left tackle and arguably the best left tackle in football. It may be a stretch pick but Smith makes sense in the role of Falcon.
Name: John Stewart
Abilities: John Stewart’s power ring provides him with the abilities of all other Green Lanterns; these abilities include flight and limited invulnerability. As with all other Green Lanterns, the ring is a weapon of the mind and powered by will, therefore only limited to the wearer’s imagination.
Athlete Match: Tyson Chandler
- NBA Champion
- Defensive Player of the Year
- NBA All-Star
- NBA All-NBA Third Team
- 3-Time Selection All-Defensive Team
Reasoning: The Green Lantern has had many faces over the years. The Green Lantern chosen for this blog was John Stewart (The Brotha Green Lantern). The Green Lantern is all about the power ring. Tyson Chandler was the driving force behind the 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks. He was a huge reason why Dallas won their ring. See where I’m going with this… The ring is a weapon of the mind and powered by will and that’s exactly how Tyson Chandler plays every single night.
Name: Ororo Munroe
Abilities: Storm is one of the most powerful mutants on Earth and has demonstrated a plethora of abilities, most of which are facets of her power to manipulate the weather. Storm possesses the psionic ability to control all forms of weather over vast areas.
Athlete Match: Sanya Richards-Ross
- 5-Time Medalists in the Olympics
- 4-Time Gold Medalists in the Olympics
- 13-Time Medalists Overall in all Competitions
Reasoning: Sanya Richards-Ross is a gold medalist and lives in the great city of Austin, TX. Storm being the only female superhero to crack this list, Richards-Ross was a perfect choice for the role. Storm is one of the most powerful mutants on Earth and in the X-Men. She’s a leader of the training mutants, like Richards-Ross who at age 30 is still competing at an Olympic level and mentoring the younger members on the squad as well. She ages like a fine wine and expect to see even more gold medals from Richards-Ross.
Name: Al Simmons
Abilities: Spawn’s body is quite dense, weighing over 450 pounds and is composed completely of necroplasm. This gives him superhuman strength, speed and durability. While he still has internal organs, they are only semi-functional, however their damage or destruction does not hinder Spawn at all. These organs magically re-appear when he regenerates his wounds
Athlete Match: Dez Bryant
- 2-Time Pro Bowler
- First Team All-Pro
Reasoning: The Dallas Cowboys may be America’s Team but to a lot of people the Cowboys are “Hell’s Team.” That’s a bit much but people really hate the Cowboys. Dez Bryant has become the team’s best player, but his perception was not always great in Dallas. He was once perceived as a guy who would never get it and a guy that was looked at as the bad guy. Like Spawn he’s channelled his anger and accepted his bad guy persona and has arguably become the best wideout in the league. Dez Bryant plays with a passion and anger on the field and for these reasons he is a great fit for the role of Spawn.
Abilities: The title “Black Panther” is a rank of office, chieftain of the Wakandan Panther Clan. As chieftain, the Panther is entitled to eat a special Heart-Shaped Herb which, in addition to his mystical connection with the Wakandan Panther God, grants him superhumanly acute senses and increases his strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, and agility to Olympic-levels.
Athlete Match: Prince Fielder
- 5-Time All Star
- 3-Time Silver Slugger Winner
Reasoning: Prince Fielder has emerged as the Rangers best hitter this season. The big bat in the heart of the order has delivered time and time again. The connection Fielder has with Black Panther besides both having superhuman strength is that Black Panther eats a special food that allows him his abilities. Fielder also likes to eat and that’s where a lot of his power comes from. Prince Fielder is the Black Panther.
Abilities: Fury is a seasoned unarmed and armed combat expert, was a heavyweight boxer in the army (during World War II), and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu.
Athlete Match: Charlie Strong
- 43-23 Overall Record
- 3 Bowl Wins
Reasoning: Nick Fury wasn’t a black guy in the comics but in the Avengers movies he’s played by the incomparable Sam L. Jackson. Charlie Strong is a perfect fit for this role because as Fury is the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., Strong is the head of the Texas Longhorns. His job is to take all of these talented athletes and make them into a team that can win a national championship. Fury does the same but tries to get his team to save the world. This may be the most spot on comparison of this list.
Name: Darryl Walker
Abilities: He has no special abilities. He’s an inventor and his inventions aren’t all that great but he does have a bulletproof suit.
Athlete Match: Rajon Rondo
Accomplishments: None with the Mavericks.
Reasoning: Rajon Rondo was the biggest disappointment in Dallas since Lamar Odom. He’s so similar to Blankman in that he has a great basketball mind but his inventions or ideas just aren’t all that great. He has the ability to create great things but those things just didn’t come to fruition in Dallas for some reason. Rajon Rondo simply may have just lost it. The once All-Star point guard looked lost at times on the court which led to his untimely demise as a Dallas Maverick. Rondo did nothing for the Mavs and deservingly so has been given the role of Blankman.
Honorable Mentions: Cyborg, Black Lightning, Blade, & Shaft.
